Linux and Unix was written in C. Many programs are written in C or one of its dirivites like C++ Java C# Perl. Many programming languages are written in C.

Today at work There was a message that was mistakenly send to a mailing list with over 6000 people. Some people started to reply all to the message wondering why it was sent to them. After a while a whole bunch of people starting sending messages saying.
1) Take me off this thread.
2) Stop replying all
3) We got the message, stop replying all.
4) There are over 6000 people on this list, stop using reply all.

All these messages were send using reply all.

Essentially it got to the point where all these people were sending messages to each other to stop sending messages to each other.

No one was sending any real messages to the thread.

I can't believe the stupidity of all these people.

Feds convict Von NotHaus of counterfeiting for currency that does not look like US currency. The Liberty Dollar is a competing currency based on the silver standard.

This company has been around for decades. Not much use for the currency in New Jersey.

There has been no law that prevents someone from printing and coining currency that DOES NOT LOOK LIKE GOVERNMENT CURRENCY.

Its the classic unintended consequences argument. Pay people to not work and they will prefer it to working. Extending unemployment benefits increases unemployment. I know that manual landscaping work is at the bottom of the pay scale.

Even if you agree with unemployment insurance, how do we continue to help people who are really out of work and are activily looking without paying for those who abuse the system?

There is a new product called snus. It is a small packet of tobacco. It is much safer than smoking. It doesn't affect the air around smokers. As a non-smoker, I think it is a great product. It allows those addicted to nicotine to get their fix without poisoning the air I breathe.

Anti smoking bans were put in place not to keep smokers from killing themselves, but to prevent their addiction from affecting the health of non-smokers.

In their show, it said that tobacco companies were prohibited of advertising snus as a way of quitting smoking. In Europe, it clearly was an effective way of quitting smoking.

So the tobacco companies advertise that it is great way of getting nicotine where smoking is prohibited. So public health advocates complain that people will use both products.

Of course they will, Tobacco companies are prohibited from saying their product can help smokers quit.

Yet another unintended consequences of the stupid laws we have in this country.

Health care bill.

Democrats have to pay politically for passing the health care bill. In order for them to pay, Republicans need the middle of the road independents and blue dog Democrats who did not like this health care bill to vote against them. It is not enough for people like me who wouldn't vote for a Democrat anyway to vote Republican.

In the last election, Democrats made Republicans pay for being pro war and pro Bush.
If Republicans want to capitalize on this mistake, they have to use arguments that will work with these people.

I think at first glance Republicans will want to paint Democrats as Pro Obama and Pro socialized heath care. Will it be enough? Only the next election will tell.

Tea Party activists will have a field day with this. But will they be organized enough to make those who voted for this bill to pay with their office?

It would be paid for the same way that phone service was expanded to everyone, by taxing everyone's phone service. I have noticed in the news that the recalls may not fix the problem. there is talk about the electronics. I am just wondering. Do they mean "Cruise Control"? If cruise control is on and there is a bad sensor reading that the cars speed is slowing down, Cruise control would accelerate the car. If another brake sensor is malfunctioning, then it would not turn off when the driver presses on the brake.

I would be curious to know if people who had these problems, if "Cruise Control" was on?

It looks like New Jersey is going to allow chronically ill paitents to be able to get Medical Marijuana. The bill is not perfect. It does not allow paitents to grow their own. It only allows 2 ounces per month. Depending on the quality of the marijuanna sold, it may not be enough for some people.

We now know that the US had intelegence about the bomb attempt before it occured.
They also want to expand the use of body scanners.

Although this may be interesting, I personally believe that it was incompentence that allowed the attack to occur. The expanded use of scanners is just a bonus.

I do not want goverment employees looking at my naked body.

Energy-efficient traffic lights can't melt snow

A downside to having energy efficient traffic lights. They don't melt snow. Drivers can't tell the color since they are covered by snow. Accidents happen. I'm sure that the accidents are worth more than a town saves on energy. The energy costs of fixing a car have to be greater than what was saved on electricity. Towns are working to fix the problem, which will cost more than the electricity saved. Using an old fashioned light bulb fixes the problem. All because of global warming.

I am seeing news posts about tax tea parties.
We elected this bunch of crooks, but it is nice to see dissatifaction with the policy of fixing the credit crises with more credit.

Inflation is bound to happen as the US curency loses value do to the extra spending without a real source of income.

Taxing "the rich" will fail as they will less incentive to make money, reducing the tax base.

Ipod shuffle crashes PC

When I connect my new 2nd generation ipod shuffle to my computer, the screen goes blank.
The only way to recover is to remove power from the computer. Turning it off is not good enough.
This happened to me twice.
I connected the shuffle by connecting the USB cable to the computer and then connecting the ipod shuffle to the cable. My computer is a Dell.

I think the problem is with electro-static discharge when I connect the ipod to the cable.

I connected the ipod shuffle to the cable, then the cable to the computer with no problems.
I should not have to be so exact to prevent a computer crash.

Sounds like a great way of avoiding the gas tax.

In California, they now have a natural gas car. They also have filling stations so you can travel farther from your home.

You can also buy a device to take natural gas from your house and fuel your vehicle.
Home fuel taxes are lower than vehicle fuel taxes so you would have an advantage of fueling at home.

I'm sure all three have contributed to the high cost of fuel. As for the last one, why are we as a country paying subsidies to grow corn to burn (ethanol) instead of feeding people?
Poor people outside of our country will go hungry and starve because we want to feel good about energy independence.

This is not a good thing. We should get off our our moral high ground about not buying foreign oil and look at the big picture. Energy independence is not worth starving people outside the United States. Its not worth the higher cost of food.

Liberals who care about alternative energy can now feel good about themselves using oil for fuel to save a starving child.

But users of cell phones, have the right to choose a cell phone company based on if their network will be up during an emergency.

The article says that Verizon wireless is not fighting this regulation because they already install backup power on their sites.

The global warming police did not like the idea that an airline decided to fly 5 people from Chicago to London. You have to read way down to notice that they needed the same airplane to fly a full flight of people from London back to Chicago.

So the airline would have flown the plane with no passengers in order to service the return trip customers.

So what is the problem? If you were on the full flight in the other direction, would like the fact that your flight was canceled because only 5 people wanted to go in the other direction?

When I read the article all the way though, you find out that this is a fancy way of using natural gas to generate electricity and have the heat by-product produce hot water.

The simple way is to have a natural gas powered electric generator.

It still produces corbon dioxide, so I don't really see the advantage.

What people don't get is that using current technology, hydrogen is extracted from a hydrocarbon, and that carbon atom is combined with oxygen to create CO2.

You may feel good burning hydrogen, even though somewhere else carbon dioxide is being produced.

I saw a headline at Drudge Report. It said that "Studies find infants begin lying at six months old". When I read the article, the bottom line was the infants learn to cry to get attention from a parent. They call it fake crying or fake laughing. That may be true, but this is the first time that a child learns to make a noise to ask for something. This is the first step of learning to talk. I would not call it lying. Lying requires the ability to deny or decieve. The child has asked for attention and has gotten it. It did not lie. What is wrong with these researchers?

If Gays think that eHarmony is discriminating against them, why do they want to support them by buying their product? I think gays want to sue eHarmony to suck them dry with lawyer fees. Then if they win the right to use the site, they won't because the owners are still bigots.

This is a freedom of association issue. People and private companies should have the right to associate with whom they want. Which means being able to not associate with others. There are gay bars that refuse straight people from entering. It is the same principle.

I know that there are issues where the only food store or gas station in town and the next one is 50+ miles away could cause a major problem. Not being able to buy the stuff of life could be life threatening. This doesn't apply. You are not in the least bit inconvenience by eHarmony's decision as the next dating site is just a click away.

R rated moves require parent or adult guardians permission to be shown to children under 17 years of age.

I think this lawsuit is a slam dunk in favor of the parents.

I am in favor of the rights of homosexuals. I am also in favor of parents raising their children the way they see fit.

By the way. This is a public school system. Specifically the Chicago Board of Education.

This is one reason why Libertarians want to get rid of the government run school system.
Parents in this system have no rights. Taxpayers should not have to pay for a school system that serves the politically connected and teachers instead of parents and children.

I haven't written any movie reviews lately so here is a movie I have seen with Netflix lately.

The Last King of Scotland is a true story about an naive idiot doctor who wants to do good work as a clinic doctor in Africa. He ends up working as Idi Amin's doctor. He is so stupid, he can't even figure out that Amin has a sexually transmitted disease. If he did, maybe he could have stopped Amin from going crazy. But the movie really isn't about that. The story is about the idiot finding out what he has gotten himself into and trying to get himself out of it.

Bob Barr, Third Party Warrior

Bob Barr has become a Libertarian. I know that he joined the Libertarian Party, joined the ACLU to fight the Patriot Act. But know he has fully embraced being a Libertarian. Why?
He switched sides in the drug war and is lobbying for the Marijuana Policy Project. His conversion is almost complete.

This is a big step forward. Even if his position is because we have a limited Federal government, that drug laws should be written and enforced at the state level, this will be a big help. That position allows the 50 states to decriminalize drugs if they choose.

One reason I think he feels this way is because of Row V Wade and abortion which I am sure that he is against. Abortion should not have been made a Federal issue. Laws about it should be at the state only. Exceptions are for the military and ships that fly the US flags.

I'm glad to have him on board. When is he going to run for office as a Libertarian? Do you think Bob Barr will run for President?

Global warming and recycling

As I understand the arguments, CO2 is a greenhouse gas and is bad for the environment. Environmentalist want to prevent the burning of fuel to prevent extra CO2 in the atmosphere.

Why do we recycle paper? If we bury it paper products then.
1) Carbon would be removed from the system when it is buried
2) We would need to grow more trees to make more paper. These trees would take CO2 out of the atmosphere.
3) The paper would be buried to be removed from the system.
4) It takes energy to recycle paper, which creates even more CO2 gas.

So why do we recycle paper? Lets start removing carbon from the atmosphere today and bury it!

Why are people making such a big deal about Obama running for President?
Blacks have run for President in both the Democratic and Republican Primaries before.
Whats the difference? Who is backing him? Is his inexperience an asset? If you don't have a history, then you can't have a bad history either. If he won the Democratic primaries would independents support him? I guess it would depend on who the Republican candidate was. Its too early to tell before the primary season begins.

For now, I'll support Ron Paul since he is a libertarian running as a Republican.
Since I don't expect him to win the primary either, I'll support Steve Kubby as a Libertarian candidate since we will still need one when Paul loses the Republican primaries.

Abortion is all that matters.

I'm reading two articles today. One about Senator McCain about Row Vs Wade should be overturned. Another about Mayor Giuliani who says he would appoint conservative judges that support the right to life, even though we know that he is for abortion rights.

The two party system has degenerated into the party of abortion vs the party of the right of the unborn. Nothing else matters.

No wonder most of us feel disinfranchised about politics. There is more to politics than this one issue.

New Jersey wants to recycling TV's

New Jersey is thinking about forcing companies to pay money for TV recycling. I don't know how they are going to manage it. How are they going to charge every TV company money for selling TV's in New Jersey? If it is done at the store, people will buy products in other states. Are they going to check out of state shippers to see if this tax was paid like the Sales tax?

Maybe they should charge a fee for each TV someone owns like they do in England.

Charging people a fee for getting rid of a TV is the most workable, and would engorrage people to give away old working TV's for free. I've given away 2 TV's at work. One was a 27 inch Sony CRT. It was not worth the effort to sell it.

Charging people for getting rid of TV's does not change what stuff is in the TV's, which is what our lawmakers want to change. I don't believe this stupid tax will do what is intended, which is normal for New Jersey.

The first candidate is Steve Kubby at http://www.kubby2008.com/. He ran for Governor as a Libertarian. He had problems with the war on drugs because he had medical problems that required him to use illegal drugs that saved his life.

The other candidate is Ron Paul at http://www.ronpaul.org/. He ran for President as a Libertarian. He changed his party to Republican and got elected as a US Congressman.

Which candidate should I support? My choice is both.
Support Ron Paul in the Republican Primary. If he wins, it will be a miracle. Small l libertarian politics will become the wave of the future if he wins. I don't believe that the Republican party will morph into a libertarian alternative, but I can't predict the future.

Even if Paul loses, he will increase the countries knowledge of libertarian philosophy. I will still support Kubby in the Libertarian convention and in the general election.

Reagan Republicans are sure to be sick of George W. Bush. He is a Republican that
1) Created the no child left behind law. Education is a state issue, not a federal one.
2) Signed an unconstitutional campaign reform bill into law.
3) supported prescription drug benefits for seniors when social security is going broke.
4) Got us into the Iraq war. I would have thought that Reagan Republicans would support the war, but I know Reagan Republicans who don't because they don't think the US should be the worlds policeman.

The man supports Democratic laws, but gets no credit for it because he doesn't give enough of our money away.

I see no Democratic candidates running for President that are small government, libertarians.
Hillary Clinton wants to Nationalize our health care system. The rest are not much better.

I listen to CATO audio. The author of Perpetuation Poverty was speaking about how Americans are keeping Africans poor by their charity. How? Because they subsidize the corruption of the country they are trying to help. I was reading a site from the Bestest Blog of all time when on I saw a link to end poverty now. http://www.one.org/ They want to take one percent of the US budget and give it away. Most likely it will be lost in corrupt countries.

I don't want to sign up. I want to know where I can sign up to be against it. Not that I want people to die hungry. I don't. But I beleive that our charity is keeping corrupt administrations in power is killing more people than would be helped by our charity.

A better charity would be The Atlas Foundation. You will have to give the money yourself instead of asking the US government to do so, but they believe that in order for these countries to not be poor, a battle of ideas needs to be won first. They help by helping freedom loving people in their own countries to start their own think tanks. The ideas will affect the government and the free market will be given a change to make a difference. It worked in this country. Low corruption (lower than third world countries) and a free market is what made our country rich. It can make the entire third world rich as well.

It is a long term solution. It will take time. But One's solution will not work because our money will be stolen by the local governments and local thugs and will not make it to the people who need it.

Downsize Trenton does not exist. I think it should. Washington DC is not the only capital that needs downsizing. New Jersey is bloated and corrupt as well. Each of the fifty states could use a website as well. New Jersey Libertarians should try and copy downsize.dc idea and allow subscribers to.
1) Get messages about pending New Jersey Legislation
2) Make it easy to send messages to their legislators. They need a way of finding their legislative district and sending emails to their legislators. This can be done from the following website. http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/ Downsize Trenton should save a subscribers district, so that he doesn't have to find it each time. And messages should go to all three members by default.
3) One or more people need to look at the legislative calender and write emails about pending legislation. A subscriber could use a stock message or add something personal to it as well.

A web site like the above should attract more than Libertarians. This may not get Libertarians more votes, but it will help kill un-libertarian legislation. There are lots of people fed up with.
1) The public school system
2) Property, income and sales taxes
3) The homestead rebate system which just moves money from one group of people to another losing money by staffing it and sending checks. The money should not be taken from the people in the first place.
4) Our Governor wants to socialize our health care system as it was done in Massachusetts.

Its not marriage, but its close. They passed this bill because the NJ Supreame court told them to. As a legal issue, I don't think judges should be able to tell legislators to pass a bill. It makes judges legislators, but I like the result of this bill since gays should have this right.

Liberatians would like the state to get out of the marriage business and allow people to write their own marrige contracts. This is not going to happen in my lifetime.

They sued Edison township because Edison tried to charge them $55 for meeting minutes in electronic form. John's letter folows.

In a decision released today, March 23, 2006, a three judge panel of theNew Jersey Superior Court, Appellate Division unanimously ruled that Edison Township's practice of charging $55 for copying public meeting minutes onto a 3.5 inch computer disk is "facially inordinate" and that"the only discernable rationale for the fee is to discourage the publicfrom requesting the information in [computer readable] format."

The successful appellants in the matter were the Libertarian Party of Central New Jersey and John Paff. The successful attorney was Richard Gutman, Esq. of Montclair.

The appellate court returned the case to the trial court for anevidentiary hearing "to determine the actual cost incurred by [Edison] in providing plaintiffs with copies of the minutes on computer diskette." The Open Public Records Act provides that "the actual cost of duplicating the record shall be the cost of materials and supplies usedto make a copy of the record, but shall not include the cost of laboror other overhead expenses associated with making the copy except [if aspecial service charge is warranted.]" N.J.S.A. 47:1A-5b." Accordingly, the actual fee should be limited to cost of the disk, which should be well less than a dollar.

I love the show Greys Anatomy. The show is really well written. I also like the blog site grey matter http://www.greyswriters.com/. This is a blog of the writters of Greys Anatomy. After the show on Sunday, one of the writers (Shonda Rhimes is the best) writes about the episode. She gives insight as to why she wrote it the way she did. Take a look at this post http://www.greyswriters.com/2006/02/from_shonda_its.html. She writes one line "Dylan explodes" and she goes into the details on how all the special effects people deal with it. Its a great insight into the minds of the people who put together the show.

The writers don't write about the future that much because they don't want to give it away. The public does respond with what they think will happen next, but that is not nearly as interesting as the writers blog.

All Hudson county birth certificates are invalid.

Sombody in Hudson county was selling false birth certificates. The way he did it was to add false records in the Hudson county archives, then sell that information to an illegal. Then the illegal could just ask for a duplicate passport and be issued one because the information he would provide would be in the hudson county archives where they look to verify that the birth occured.

My girlfriends father needed to renew his NJ drivers license. They no accept Hudson county birth certificates. They make a copy of your now invalid birth certificates, fax it to Trenton where they verify the infomation before you have to come back the Motor Vehicle Commission to get your new license.

If you were born in Hudson County, I strongly suggest that you get a new birth certificate from Trenton so that you don't have this problem when you come to the MVC. Passports are still valid if you have one, but if you don't you need to get a new birth certificate to get one anyway.

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, there is a privacy concern about the data the government is asking for.

One the other hand, They say they are asking for it to protect the Child Online Protection Act.

So the feds are after child pornographers and sexual preditors. Do these people have any rights? This got me interested in how one would find child porn so I googled "Child port" found an article that said ‘Legal child porn’ under fire. I didn't think that child porn was legal, so I looked at the article at http://www.msnbc.com/news/730491.asp . It looks like you don't just type in child porn, you type in "preteen model" and a bunch of sites come up. It makes me think about what Jon Bonet Ramsey was doing before she was murdered.

Is the goverment really looking for the gray area when girls are dressing in sexually sugestive clothing? Or are they going after the hard stuff?

This really makes me sick until I came to the conclusion that I may be investigated just for typing child porn or preteen model in a search engine.

I don't think I have done anything wrong, so I have to agree with Google that they should not release this information.

I wonder what other legal synonyms mean child porn. Do they change when the FBI finds out about them?

Yahoo has just started to role out a new Yahoo mail beta, It least if you pay for it.
Free users may get it later.

It looks a lot like microsoft outlook, only it is web based.

My only gripe is that the old interface had a way of separating my address into catagories.
The new interface does not apear to allow me to separate my "Contacts" in the same fashion.

They have a preview pane, which I hate because that is how spam in outlook is executed when I didn't really open the mail.

They have tabbed email, like the new non microsoft browsers. Interesting, but I don't really know if is useful yet.

Minor stuff. They renamed adresses into contacts, Bulk folder is renamed to spam.

They have a way of integrating RSS feeds into the mail. This looks really cool, but I have yet to try it out.

I agree with this article in most respects. What I don't get is why both parties agree with the insane war on drugs. Republicans believe in a limited fedreal government, or so they say. They use the interstate commerce clause in the constitution to regulate everything. This is not something that the federal goverment should be involved in.

I think the religious right has something to do with this. They attempted to make alcohol illegal on moral grounds. They failed. They are now making other drugs illegal on moral grounds.

If we want Republicans to reverse the drug laws for Marijunanna, we need to use moral grounds to do so.

Students don't like being censored in a school newspaper. This is Understandable.
But Dwight Teeter should know better. See his quote below.

Newspapers are owned by someone. The owners have the right to edit the content. If this was a paid position, it would be called an editor. If you write for the New York Times, they have the right to edit your content.

On the other hand, these students can publish a blog and let students know where it is. Since the school wouldn't own the blog, they would have more freedom to write what they want.

I think this is a good lesson. The students have not finished it yet. But I am sure they will.

Giants Seahawks game

Did anyone watch the Giants Seahawks game? I think the officials were playing as well. I can't believe how many false start penalties they called. The fans were so noisy that someone should have told them to shut up.

Also in overtime, they reversed a catch in a review before a fumble. The ball was not stable, but it was moved from one arm to another, which shows control.

And the three field goals that the kicker could not get. One of them was clearly too long and should not have been tried. The other two would have given the giants the game.

It was an entertaining close game.

This Saturday, I bought family foom furniture at IKEA and spend the rest of the day putting it together. Oh what fun. Eventually, I'll get to buy a high defininition set for it. When you are bored, watch TV.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. Maybe in a 4 day weekend I might do something interesting to place in this blog. I'm staying home. How boring.
Why is life so boring? Is it because I have a boring girlfriend? Is it because I have a boring job? Why am I so boring?

Time to fill out my timesheet.

Soon it will be impossible to go to the mall because it is so crowded.
People run around buying gifts for people they don't care for so people they don't care for will send them gifts.

Ok, some people are buying gifts for their kids. They have to lie to them and tell them there really is a Santa Clause. Otherwise, I don't think they would bother.

I guess that is enough boring things for today.

They just want their cut of the fun.

NJ tries to ban smoking in all public places.

When are they going to make being happy illegal?

The politicians keep stealing our money in New Jersey so they come out with this to distract us. What a joke.

I can't believe the major candidates. The mud slinging is outragious. With all the money these guys spend, I still can't really tell these guys apart. I can't stand Corzine, but Forrester has given me absolutly no reason to vote for him. I'm voting for Jeff Pawlowski.

As for the public questions. I'm voting against them. As funny as the acting Governor's in NJ is, I still think that there is no reason to pay someone to hang out just because the governer may resign. This isn't the President of the USA.

The other public question allows the government to spend more money. I don't care if they don't think they will have to tax me more. I don't want to give them permission to spend my money.
